Existential trauma, a realm often overlooked in traditional therapeutic approaches, delves into the profound impact of traumatic experiences on one’s fundamental sense of existence. Unlike more conventional therapies that focus solely on symptoms and coping mechanisms, existential trauma treatment delves into the core questions of meaning, purpose, and identity that are shaken by life-altering events.

Existential trauma is not just about the event itself; it’s about the shattering of one’s foundational understanding of the world due to one’s experience of said event(s). It thrusts individuals into a profound existential crisis, questioning the very fabric of their existence. This form of trauma may arise from a wide range of life events such as the loss of a loved one, life-threatening illness/event/situation, natural disasters, life transitions, betrayal or broken trust, identity crisis, and profound failure or setback. These examples highlight the diverse nature of existential trauma. These lived experiences challenge one’s beliefs and values, leaving the world and one’s experience uncertain and needing reevaluation.

At the heart of existential trauma treatment lies the exploration of meaning. Viktor E. Frankl, a psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, emphasized the importance of finding meaning even in the most horrific circumstances. Existential trauma treatment adopts this perspective and the philosophical attitudes towards meaning to guide individuals through a journey of self-discovery to make sense of their experiences.

In existential trauma treatment, philosophical concepts are integrated into sessions. Concepts such as freedom, responsibility, and the nature of existence become crucial touchpoints. Through dialogues and reflections, individuals are encouraged to explore their beliefs, values, and the impact of the trauma on their existential framework.

Existential trauma treatment recognizes the inherent tension between freedom and responsibility. Trauma can leave individuals feeling powerless, yet the therapeutic process empowers them to reclaim agency over their lives. Therapists guide individuals in reconstructing their understanding of identity and purpose, assisting them in forging a coherent narrative from the chaos of trauma. It acknowledges that healing involves addressing psychological symptoms that impact daily life and relationships and nurturing an individual’s less tangible and existential dimensions. This comprehensive perspective aims to facilitate deep transformations that are in the fabric of one’s very core of being.

Central to existential trauma treatment is the therapeutic relationship. Collaboration is imperative in treating and healing from trauma. The therapy relationship is one of curiosity where one’s deepest existential concerns are explored. My personal belief is that each client I work with is the expert of their own experience, and together, with my clinical knowledge as guidance, we can make sense of their experience and create lasting change. Through curiosity, understanding, and non-judgmental support, therapists become partners in the process of self-discovery and healing.

Existential trauma treatment represents a nuanced and reflective approach to therapy. By addressing the existential dimensions of traumatic experiences, individuals can embark on a transformative journey that transcends symptom management, leading to a deeper healing and understanding of themselves and the world around them.
