Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Safer Yoga

trauma sensitive yoga

Yoga means to “yoke”. It means to bring things together that are in opposition like our mind and body or our heart and spirit. Yoga gives us the opportunity to show up and practice again and again, to start over.” ~Michelle Cassandra Johnson

Yoga is a powerful complement to therapy, as it allows us to connect with our bodies in a way that we may not have before, by focusing on our breath. By practicing yoga, we can begin to experience our bodies in the present moment, regulate our nervous system, and shift our perspectives.

Safer yoga means that we provide a space where people who have suffered trauma can feel safer, and have a sense of control and trust. I may not know everyone’s story who walks through the door, but I always offer choices and create a safer environment for everyone. I do not provide hands-on assistance as I respect everyone’s boundaries and consent.

I love yoga as an adjunct to therapy because it helps us learn new coping tools that we can use in our everyday lives and allows us to tolerate the discomfort that sometimes arises in therapy (and in life). This enables us to do deeper work with our therapist.

When we feel safer in our bodies, we are better able to manage our emotions. As Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. says, “People who feel safe in their bodies can begin to translate the memories that previously overwhelmed them into language.”

My goal as your yoga teacher is to create a welcoming, supportive, inclusive, and safer environment for everyone. Remember that this is your practice, and you always have a choice.

I want to make the distinction that I am a yoga teacher, not a therapist. In my classes I welcome all levels of ability. Mats, blocks, and other accessories are available. I recommend wearing clothes that are comfortable to move in. Shirts are required.
