Support for Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, and Birth Trauma

You’re adjusting to a new life—and it’s harder than you expected.

Pregnancy and new parenthood can be a transitional time with lots of ups and downs, and for some can bring lots of intensity. While you may have expected some sleepless nights and mood shifts, the depth of your anxiety, disconnection, or grief might have taken you by surprise. You may feel ashamed for not loving every moment. You might ask yourself, “Why does this feel so overwhelming?”

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

At The Catalyst Center, we specialize in postpartum therapy for new moms and parents navigating the emotional landscape of pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood. Whether you’re dealing with postpartum depression, anxiety, or the lingering effects of a difficult or traumatic birth, or simply struggling to adjust to your new identity, compassionate support is available.

We forget that when a child is born, so is a mother. Support during this sacred transition isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.

What Is Postpartum Therapy?

Postpartum therapy helps new mothers and parents process the emotional, physical, and hormonal shifts that come with pregnancy and early parenthood. It’s normal to experience mood changes, fatigue, and uncertainty during this time—but when these challenges feel overwhelming, therapy can help you feel more like yourself again.

Many of our clients are navigating:

    • Postpartum depression, anxiety, or OCD

    • Difficult or unexpected birth experiences

    • NICU stays or feeding challenges

    • Fertility struggles or grief after loss

    • Struggles with bonding or feeling “numb” toward your baby

    • Identity shifts and changes in relationships

    • Overwhelm while juggling parenting and work

    • Body image or eating concerns during pregnancy or postpartum

How Postpartum Therapy Helps You Heal and Reconnect with Yourself

In therapy, we create a safe and compassionate space for you to share what you’re experiencing without fear of judgment. We know that intrusive thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and exhaustion are real and valid.

Therapy may support you in:

  • Processing grief, fear, guilt, or disappointment
  • Making sense of your birth story
  • Regulating panic and intrusive thoughts
  • Strengthening your sense of identity and confidence
  • Deepening your connection to yourself and your baby
  • Navigating changes in sex, intimacy, and/or body image

Our Postpartum Therapy and Psychiatry Services

Whether you’re seeking talk therapy, mind-body approaches, or collaborative psychiatric care, we’ll help you find the right blend of support. Both in-person and telehealth sessions are available.

We welcome all paths to parenthood and honor the experiences of all parents—including fathers, non-birthing partners, adoptive parents, and those navigating loss or infertility. You deserve care, no matter your story

In addition to traditional talk therapy, our Denver-based perinatal mental health specialists offer a wide range of evidence-based and integrative approaches to support you. Your treatment plan may include:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR helps process birth trauma and other distressing experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming or stuck in the body. We also use EMDR to reduce intrusive thoughts and guilt/shame, address frightening medical events (e.g., NICU), and prepare for future births with future‑template work. Gentle, perinatal‑safe resourcing (and attachment‑focused EMDR can support bonding and stabilization during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Integrative Psychiatry

Our psychiatric providers have ample experience working with clients during their pregnancy or postpartum transition. Erin Wyatt, PMHNP-BC and Adrienne Long, PMHNP-BC take a whole-person approach that considers nutrition, sleep, hormonal balance, and mental health to restore overall well-being, while also addressing symptoms of postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD with compassionate, evidence-based care.

Couples Therapy for Pregnancy and the Postpartum Transition

Couples therapy can support partners navigating the emotional and relational changes of pregnancy and new parenthood. Therapy helps couples process shared trauma—such as a difficult birth experience, NICU stay, or postpartum depression—while strengthening communication, empathy, and teamwork during this major life transition.

We also offer couples therapy focused on pregnancy support, helping partners prepare emotionally for parenthood, align expectations, and strengthen their bond before birth.

Somatic Therapy

This approach helps regulate the nervous system during pregnancy and postpartum by guiding you to reconnect with your body, release birth-related tension, and restore safety. Somatic Experiencing (SE) techniques gently support healing from postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and bonding challenges.

Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a promising treatment for severe or treatment‑resistant postpartum depression. Full‑dose ketamine therapy sessions can provide rapid relief from depressive symptoms while promoting emotional breakthroughs and neuroplasticity through guided integration work. For clients processing birth trauma, lower‑dose KAP sessions may be used to support nervous system regulation and gentle trauma resolution. We coordinate care with your OB/pediatrician to ensure safety and individualized planning, including considerations for breastfeeding.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a gentle, brain-based training that improves emotional regulation, sleep, and stress resilience, particularly useful for postpartum anxiety or overwhelm.

Common Questions About Postpartum Therapy and Psychiatry

Is it normal to have scary thoughts after giving birth?

Yes. Intrusive thoughts are actually quite common during the postpartum period. You’re not alone, and they don’t mean anything about your ability to be a good parent. We provide a space to talk about these experiences without fear or shame.

What’s the difference between the baby blues and postpartum depression?

Baby blues are very common and usually resolve within 2–3 weeks after birth. Postpartum depression and anxiety are more intense and longer-lasting. If you’re not feeling like yourself, it’s worth reaching out—we can help you understand what’s going on.

Is it normal to feel disconnected from my baby?

Yes. Bonding isn’t always instant. Feeling detached can be part of postpartum depression or trauma. With the right support, connection can be built—even if it takes time.

Can I bring my baby to therapy?

In most cases, yes—especially newborns! We also offer flexible virtual therapy options so you can get support from home without added logistics.
