As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have focused on providing support for families for over twenty years. Although not the first thing clients often consider, I’m incredibly passionate about family therapy with adult family members. I view my role as guiding families through complex relationship dynamics, assisting them in repairing relationships, rebuilding trust, and establishing necessary boundaries.
What is Family Therapy with Adult Family Members?
Family therapy with adult family members is a therapeutic approach that focuses on addressing and improving the dynamics within a family unit. Unlike therapy that focuses on individuals or children, family therapy with adults involves working with multiple family members to explore communication patterns, unresolved conflicts, and relational issues that may have developed over time. The goal is to foster understanding, strengthen connections, and create healthier interactions.
Family therapy can help rebuild trust, enhance emotional support, and ultimately lead to a more cohesive and harmonious family life by providing a safe space for open dialogue.
Common concerns addressed in this model of family therapy:
- Navigating transitions such as marriage, divorce, or aging
- Intergenerational trauma
- Reconciliation or resolution of long-standing conflicts
- Family conflict
- Building closer relationships
- Establishing boundaries
- Grief and loss
- Reconnecting after a family member’s passing
- Adapting to significant changes in the family
- Supporting blended families and creating a supportive structure for children
My Approach to Working with Families
I typically begin by meeting with all family members together, followed by individual sessions to understand their therapy goals. Subsequently, I work with the entire family in group sessions and may also conduct sessions with smaller groups to achieve each individual’s goals. While I prefer in-person sessions, I am also experienced in working with families virtually, which can benefit families living in different locations.
Family Change and LGBTQ+ Support
I have a wealth of experience in providing support to families when a family member decides to come out or undergoes a gender transition. My role involves helping families navigate through the process by providing explanations and fostering understanding, especially when there are conflicting beliefs or cultural misunderstandings related to identity.
Why I’m Passionate About this Work
I find fulfillment in helping clients and families navigate complex family relationships and witnessing their growth and unity. It is gratifying to help families recognize the unique contributions of each individual within the family system and to aid in healing intergenerational trauma. Strengthening family through growing empathy is especially rewarding.
Final Thoughts
Family therapy with adult members is a deeply meaningful aspect of my practice, and I’m honored to support families through their unique journeys. Each family brings its own set of dynamics, challenges, and strengths, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see relationships transform and heal over time. Whether navigating transitions, addressing long-standing conflicts, or building new connections, I believe that every family has the potential to create a more harmonious and supportive environment. It is my privilege to guide families in this process, helping them to foster deeper understanding, resilience, and unity.
