In life, we often prepare for significant events: we study for exams, undergo training for jobs, and take classes to improve our skills. Yet, when it comes to relationships, many of us dive in headfirst, hoping for the best without adequate preparation. Premarital counseling is an essential tool that helps couples establish a strong foundation for their future together. It equips them to overcome the inevitable struggles that will come their way. Whether you’re contemplating marriage, already engaged, or committing to a long-term partnership, investing your time and energy in premarital counseling now will yield significant benefits in the future.

As a couples therapist, I see many distressed couples who didn’t learn the skills to build a healthy relationship, who have been in pain for many years and are now in my office trying to figure it out. I often wish schools would provide a Relationship 101 course, as we all need to learn these important life skills. I’m on a mission to teach and empower couples to identify and address potential issues before they escalate and create too much distance. So, whether you’re committing at a church, courthouse, or under the stars, remember that premarital counseling is crucial in setting a solid foundation for your relationship. It’s not just reserved for religious couples; everyone can access it. Don’t leave the fate of your relationship to chance — take the proactive step and allocate a portion of your wedding budget to premarital counseling. This preventative work will set the stage for a fulfilling and enduring union.
